Upcoming Installation of Pole and Data Collector
New System to Improve Collection of Water Meter Information

City of Tumwater Monday, June 26 – Friday, July 21, 2023

Over the next few weeks, crews will be in your [Bridlewood] neighborhood installing a 30-foot pole and equipment as part of City of Tumwater efforts to improve how water meter information is collected. The new AMI data collectors are being rolled out at several locations around the city. All installations should be completed by the end of 2023.

Currently the city uses a drive-by system that reads water meters as field staff drive by them each month for billing purposes. Over the next few weeks, crews will be out installing poles and data collectors at select locations around the city as part of a new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system that utilizes permanently installed data collectors to collect meter reading information continuously. The new AMI system will eliminate the need to roll a truck and staff in the field to complete the task, thus reducing fuel use and allowing staff to focus on other critical tasks and customer service needs. Information from the data collectors will be uploaded hourly and will help identify high usage and potential customer leaks on private property.

Longer term, the city will explore developing a customer web portal that would give customers access to their account and meter reading information and tools to assist with monitoring and reduction of water use.

Some increased traffic may occur on area streets when equipment and material are moved in and out. Driveway access for the adjacent properties will be maintained. All scheduled construction projects are subject to change due to weather, equipment, and project delays.
